Troubleshooting Group Email Delivery Failures (Routing Overrides)
Email delivery issues in Google Groups can occur due to routing rules (Recipient Address Map) overriding group membership. This causes emails to be redirected, skipping some group members. Fix by enabling “Also route to original destination” or updating the mapping rule.
- Incident Overview
Symptom: A user is added as a member of a Google Group (e.g., billing@domain.com) but does not receive any emails sent to that group, even though other members do. Root Cause: A Recipient Address Map rule is active for the group address. This rule intercepts incoming mail and redirects it to specific addresses, often with the "Also route to original destination" setting disabled, effectively bypassing the Group’s actual membership list. - Technical Diagnosis
To confirm if a routing rule is interfering with a group:
1. Run an Email Log Search: * Search for a test message sent to the group.
If the Group address shows a status of "Dropped" while other specific users show "Delivered" or "Bounced," a routing rule is likely active.
2. Locate the Mapping Rule:
Go to Admin Console > Apps > Google Workspace > Gmail > Routing.
Scroll down to Email forwarding using recipient address map. - Resolution Steps
If an active rule is found for the affected group:
Option A: Enable Dual Delivery (Recommended)
This allows the group membership list to function normally while keeping the manual mapping active.
1. Click Edit on the relevant mapping rule.
2. Locate the setting: "Also route to original destination".
3. Change this setting to ON.
4. Save the rule.
Result: Google will now deliver to the mapped addresses AND all members currently listed in the Google Group.
Option B: Manual Map Update
Use this if you want to strictly control who gets mail via the mapping tool rather than the Group membership.
- Click Edit on the mapping rule.
- Under Address Mappings, add the missing user’s email address.
- Save the rule.
When a ticket arrives stating "User not receiving group mail," follow this workflow:
- Verify Membership: Check admin.google.com > Groups to ensure the user is an active member.
- Verify Subscription: Ensure the user’s delivery setting is "Each Email" and not "No Email" or "Digest."
- Check for Overrides: Immediately check Gmail Routing / Address Maps. If a mapping rule exists for that group, the "Members" list in the Group settings is likely being ignored.
- Test Internal vs. External: Send a test from a different internal account. If it fails, it's a routing rule. If it only fails for external senders, it's an Access/Spam permission issue.
